The original classic car restoration series
Wacky Automotive Inventions
File these videos into the “It seemed like a good idea at the time” category. Here are a series of 20th century inventions designed to improve our lives as we drive (or scooter). As you'll notice, a couple of these inventions were actually put into production and some are being worked on today. But the majority are laugh-out-loud impractical and have rightly disappeared into the dustbin of history. Enjoy!

Not only do we get a rundown of the features on these cars and what was important to car buyers in the 1950's, but we also get a glimpse at the 'hard sell' advertising methods commonly used by Madison Avenue in those days. Obviously, consumers back then had no problem sitting through a two minute commercial, something unheard of in the "...

As a toddler in early 1960's I'd stand on the front seat everywhere we went, if Mom or dad hsd to stop short i got good at catching myself on the dashboard. 😉🇺🇸
Who could ever forget the "Whoa Nellie" flamboyant style of one of the 1950s most famous TV announcers known as Dick Lane. His car ads were marked by his passion to prove these cars were worth every penny and he would give one of them a hard slap to accentuate his sincerity. That was, until he accidentally dented one of the fenders. Classic! 🙂
“A brilliant kaleidoscope of sensible change.” That is my favorite slogan ever!
Beautiful cars....beautiful time's 😢
When car companies had brands named DeSoto, Edsel, Studebaker, Willys, Oldsmobile, Packard. Which brand could be resurrected in today's market and stand even the slightest chance of moderate success. Any?
wow shamed they made these old commercials so short. they can barley fit any info in there
A Spyder drove up beside her and took Ms Muffet's breath away ruclips.net/video/C1lHoNG2SHg/видео.htmlsi=HQQl3bUXUAp7KJnv
The cars from my childhood, good memories.
In response to those on here trying to run down the safety of these cars, i can verify that compared to the cars of today, THESE rides were all TANKS. I wonder what some of these "amateur safety critics" would say if they watched some vintage Jimmy Stewart movie about the Indianapolis 500, complete with actual footage of THOSE GUYS going over 150mph in OPEN COCKPIT ROADSTERS, racing on those BRICKS?! For a VARIETY of reasons, WAKE UP, YOUNGSTERS! 🙄
Agreed. These classics were made of heavier gage metal and there was more metal surrounding the occupants. Today's cars are often about fuel economy and as a result are made lighter, smaller and with thinner metal. The result is a more dangerous car, in my view. As I see it, the only significant safety innovation in the automotive industry is the 3-point safety belt. That design really has made a difference in saving lives.
@@ccgtvonline all that stuff helps. Soft interior s, collapsible columns, dual master cylinders, tempered glass, so shards don't stab u.
Some part of me is left in the 50’s
When The Big Industry Was Excited To ACTUALLY SELL Their Products.
Yes GM did miss a mark on the rear suspension, but Corvair was actually the right car at right time.
Water proof ignition LMAOOOOO
Car ads are really their own breed. I don’t know what it is
When you see those car commercial you still can't have it to own just the same As porm in the books
I just love these commercials .
Did the pretty woman at 0:30 get hazard pay for walking around in a swimsuit when it's -20?
Wow! Waterproof ignition! 🤗
When you talk about cars, of course, you mean these cars in the past eras, not today cartoon cars
It's so sad that I'm born too late.. everybody talking about electric cars now.. Where is the style, the history and... THE SMILE!
That Edsel commercial is real funny. When that car came out and people would see it a block away, they would curse it and say how ugly it was. But then Ford pushed the Pinto and Explorer and Victoria Police Interceptor without any regard for human life or safety.
Bull...Twinkie, in general. BUT Ford HAS produced some ugly cars more often than many other makes. You forgot to mention the Falcon; in my opinion one of THE VERY ugliest cars ever designed.
Banging on that GTO front end today would get you shot🤔
Pretty much...🤣
Women were so beautiful back then. Clean fresh faces. Not like today.
Sound like Guy Mitchell For 57 Ford
I remember watching Leave it to Beaver, they taped over the Fairlane 500 logo on the 57 ford while Ward and Fred Rutherford tried to find Beaver and Violet.
Older cars have style new cars just like a gadget on wheels inside
Love seeing people dress up to go to a dealership, today I see people in public in their Jammies with unwashed hair, out and about like it's acceptable?
The 1954 Lincoln was such a disappointing design. It's basically a Mercury with longer rear fenders. Compare it to a Cadillac of the same year.
Perfect white world before blm bomb

Women know nothing about buying a car
That early Corvette was too cool
Un pur bonheur !
1969 Chev pick up truck under $2000 Payment $99 a month - 24 months.
The second commercial for the '57 Ford is my favorite 50's car commercial. The song is so catchy. It helps to actually have a '57 Ford too.
At 03:34 that is not fair ... WoW... 🌹🤗
The face that used to get smashed back then usually had a dumb brain behind it.
The commercial of minute 13:04 I need it urgently and you think you could send it to me by gmai
Do 1970s 1980s Car Commercials?
Cool!😎
I would LOVE to have that 2-door 1954 Lincoln. I've seen one in person. Just beautiful. I would love to see what colors some of these cars are!!
1961 Chevy's had X frames, ZERO side impact protection. "Let'em die, it's cheaper if they sue us" philosophy which carried on to today.
That red carpet Ambassador commercial is very well done considering no modern special effects computers involved.
Trivia question: (Without cheating) Name the company that built the Ambassador.
Pretty sure that's Patrick O'Neal doing the voice-over on the '68 GTO commercial. One of Hollywood's great voices.
love how much slower the second cars break in the first clip. Such an act.
Garroway suffered a serious car accident not long after filming his rhapsody for Corvette.
1958 Edsel ad!
The Edsel and Corvette commercials were my favorites. Most of those cars are serious collectibles today.
"Modern cars look like electric razors". I heard that said in a movie. I don't remember the movie, but I remember that statement. I sure agree. Cars back then were really something to look at. Today, I have hotwheels cars that have more metal in them than real cars, and the styling was just incredible. Even the commercials were great.
I agree with the quote, like that just look so dumb, so plain, I’d rather spend thousands of dollars for a 1950’s car
I have a 1994 Toyota Celica , some man was coming out of Costco a couple of years ago & ran into me , I figured the worst, but there was NO DAMAGE!!!! , he had a newer ford truck, I couldn’t figure that out ?????
They truly were art on wheels, specially when you see one of them restored in the street and the rest of modern cars look like toys next to these masterpieces Saw a cadillac eldorado and 57’ impala when I was a kid and I was totally amazed, my grandfather (we are from europe) said that european cars from the 50’s were nothing on this cars, and that he wishes to go back in time to live in usa and experience that american 50’s lifestyle
